Jesus’ Blood Donation

August 10th, 2009 by Jeremy Sprouse

Over 4.5 million patients need blood transfusions every year in the U.S. and Canada. In fact, about every two seconds someone is in need of blood. This need is met by blood donors—people who are willing to undergo a little pain for a short while to save lives. Jesus, however, donated His blood to us with great suffering and agony. He gave the greatest blood donation ever. Just as blood is essential to life, Jesus’ blood is essential to spiritual life. Let’s look at three comparisons.
First, blood is necessary for the distribution of nutrients. Our blood delivers vital nutrients and oxygen to the cells of our bodies. The blood of Jesus also delivers a vital nutrient to our spiritual lives—forgiveness. We have all sinned and earned death (Romans 3:23, 6:23). It is the blood of Christ that justifies us making it as if we have no sin (Romans 5:9). Jesus’ blood provides a continual cleaning from sin. All we need to do is walk in the light and confess our sins (1 John 1:5-10).
Second, blood contributes to the defense of the body. Our blood contains phagocytes which engulf and ingests bacteria and other foreign bodies. The blood of Jesus also defends our spiritual lives by cleansing us from dead works to serve the living God (Hebrews 9:13-14). It seals us in the life-giving covenant (Matthew 26:27-28). Also, it serves as a reminder not to sin (Hebrews 10:26-30).
Third, blood functions to regulate and repair. Blood is used to regulate our body temperature, pH levels, fluid volume, and salt concentrations. It is also involved in removing wastes from our body. The blood of Jesus also regulates and repairs our spiritual lives. It repaired our relationship with God making peace (Colossians 1:19-20). The blood of Christ allows us to draw near to God (Ephesians 2:13) and enter into the holy place (Hebrews 10:19).
How do you say thanks for such a great, life-saving donation? As Christians, we need to understand the immense value of the blood of Christ and how we are to respond—with obedience (1 Peter 1:14-19). We need to remember we were bought with a price. We are no longer our own. We should use our bodies to glorify God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
