A Proverb for the Day 11:2

April 24th, 2009 by Jeremy Sprouse

“When pride comes, then comes dishonor, But with the humble is wisdom” (Proverbs 11:2 NASU). It is ironic that when we strive to be honored, we often end up producing the exact opposite result. Arrogance is an overestimation of oneself that often leads to trying to show others how great you are, but instead leads to humiliating mistakes. Arrogance has led many to boldly speak where they have no knowledge. Arrogance had led many to hold to a position or idea even after it has shown to be error—which, of course, makes them look foolish. Arrogance can cause one to respond without thinking a matter through and the individual often ends up saying something foolish. On the other hand, when we do not overestimate ourselves it provides us with opportunities for growth. We are able to listen and learn from others, admit our mistakes, and think things through before we speak.
