A Proverb for the Day 11:1

April 23rd, 2009 by Jeremy Sprouse

“A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, But a just weight is His delight” (Proverbs 11:1 NASU). In those days, businesses often used scales for pricing goods such as wheat and barley. It was easy to adjust your scales to get a little extra profit and likely no one would know, but God would (cf. Amos 2:6, 8:5). Today, we often have ample opportunities to cheat and steal. It may be little things we think are of no consequence—copying videos and music illegally, software piracy, or taking towels from hotels. Some things we don’t even consider to be stealing, but in reality, they are. For example, when we sneak food into a movie theater even though it is forbidden by the theaters and steals from revenue they would have earned from their way over-priced snacks. We rationalize these actions to ourselves thinking: “These are big industries it won’t hurt them if I do this,” “Everyone else is doing it why shouldn’t I?,” or “They charge too much anyways.” Even if our rationalizations are true, it is still displeasing to God. God is pleased when we live with honesty and integrity.
