A Proverb for the Day 1:30-31
January 30th, 2009“They would not accept my counsel, They spurned all my reproof. “So they shall eat of the fruit of their own way And be satiated with their own devices” (Proverbs 1:30-31 NASU). If we would just realize the consequences of our actions, we would live wiser lives. Notice the following three principles of reaping and sowing: 1) We will reap what we sow and only what we sow (Galatians 6:7-9). You don’t sow apples and reap grapes. Likewise, you don’t sow gossip and reap trust. 2) We will reap more than we sow (2 Corinthians 9:6). Whatever we sow, God is going to return it to us bountifully. Our actions have a way of snowballing and having greater results/consequences than we ever considered. 3) We have to eat what we reap (Proverbs 1:31). There is nothing else to eat except what we have sown. We cannot eat what another has sown. We cannot go to the store and buy something else. We alone will bear the results of our harvest and there is no escape (cf. Ezekiel 18:20).
Those who have rejected wisdom and sown foolishness will eat of their foolishness to the point of being satiated (i.e., filled to the point of being stuffed). Often when we eat too much we are filled with regret and nauseated. It is often the same with our lives. Too many look back on their lives with shame and regret. They see wasted years, misplaced priorities, and vain accomplishments because they have spurned wisdom. They see friendships ruined and families torn apart out of selfishness and backbiting. We do not have to look back with regret, however, if we will follow God’s instructions.
