A Disgusted Sports Fan

November 22nd, 2008 by Jeremy Sprouse

Football in the fall. Basketball in the winter. Baseball in the spring and summer. This minister has been an avid sports fan all his life. But I’ve had it! I quit this sports business once and for all. You can’t get me near one of those places again. Want to know why? I’ll tell you…

 Every time I went, they asked me for money.
 The people I had to sit with didn’t seem very friendly.
 The seats were too hard and not comfortable at all.
 I went to many games, but the coach never came to call on me.
 The referee made a decision I could not agree with.
 I suspected that I was sitting with some hypocrites—they came to see their friends and what others were wearing rather than to see the game.
 Some games went into overtime, and I was late getting home.
 The band played some numbers that I had never heard before.
 It seems the games are scheduled when I want to do other things.
 I was taken to too many games by my parents when I was growing up.
 I don’t want to take my children to any games, because I want them to choose for themselves what sport they like best. (Author unknown)

For sports fans out there, this guy seems like a real whiner. These are just things the true fan puts up with. Who cares if they guy next to you acts like a jerk or the woman in front is more concerned with her outfit than the game? Not the real sports fan, that’s for sure. Strangely enough, these are just a variation of excuses one hears about why coming to worship is just too much trouble. Why tolerate these things for the sake of a hobby but not for the sake of God? It couldn’t be because sports and hobbies are more important to us, could it?
When Paul looked at his life, everything he thought of as good in his life was rubbish compared to knowing Christ (Philippians 3:8). Jesus came so that we could live life to the full (John 10:10). God gives us all spiritual blessings in Christ (Ephesians 1:3) and pours out more love on us than we can fully comprehend (Ephesians 3:14-19). Why don’t we have Paul’s attitude?
We make time for things that are important to us. Somehow the same person who can’t make it to church because they’re too busy can find time to watch Monday night football. Which is more important? If the game was on at 9:00 AM on Sunday, you’d get up to see it. God’s game is on at 9:00 Sunday morning. Are you going to be there?
