Christians are Killers

Every Christian must be a killer. We are not talking about killing by accident or in the line of duty, but by pre-meditated, deliberate, and methodical murder. In Colossians 3:5, Paul tells us to: “put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. ” (NKJV). We each have a sinful body we must murder so that we can live for Christ.
We must kill our victim through neglect. If we refuse to feed the desires of our sinful body, those desires will starve and waste away. If we do not let our bodies of sin flex their muscles, those muscles will shrink and become useless. The more we abstain from any particular sin, the less of a hold that sin has on us and the easier it is to overcome its temptations. In Colossians 3:5-7, Paul tells us sins such as fornication, uncleanness, engaging in sinful passions, evil desires, and covetousness can all be put to death with this method. All of these sins can take a strong hold on a person, but they can be defeated through neglect. We must neglect the part of us that desires to sin to the point that our bodies of sin die.
We must not let our victim cry out. Our sinful bodies cry out with anger, wrath, malice, blasphemies, filthy language, and lies (Colossians 3:8-9). Until we train our thinking, sinful thoughts will pop into our heads. We need to recognize them for what they are and refuse to pay attention. If we do not pay attention to the cries of our sinful bodies, we will no longer curse when we hit our thumbs with a hammer. We will no longer react with yelling or be in the habit of spreading rumors and gossip. We must stop listening to sin so that it loses its effect on our tongues.
We must bury our victim. With our old selves out of the picture, we will be more able to ensure we move on into our new life with Christ. Paul tells us we need to “put off the old man with his deeds” (Colossians 3:9). Unfortunately, many look back at their old selves longingly after coming to Christ. We don’t want to look upon that body of sin and remember the passing pleasures of sin. We don’t want to remember how lying seemed to ease our troubles. We want to put it completely out of our mind and focus on our new life with Christ (Colossians 3:10-11).
We must murder our bodies of sin to do away with its habits and desires. To kill its members, silence its tongue, and bury its body. We need to be serious about getting sin out of our lives.
