Sitting in Water

Ronald Meredith, in his book Hurryin’ Big for Little Reasons, tells the reaction of his tame mallards as wild birds flew overhead:

“They heard the wild call they had once known. The honking out of the night sent little arrows of prompting deep into their wild yesterdays. Their wings fluttered a feeble response. The urge to fly—to take their place in the sky for which God made them—was sounding in their feathered breasts, but they never raised from the water.”
“The matter had been settled long ago. The corn of the barnyard was too tempting! Now their desire to fly only made them uncomfortable. Temptation is always enjoyed at the price of losing the capacity for flight.”

How often do we sit uncomfortable as we examine God’s Word? How often do we see the heights to which we are called, but never strive to reach them? Too often we are complacent in our spiritual life. We are comfortable with the lives we have—the funny TV show that lifts up immorality, the gossip that makes such great conversations, and a little more sleep on Sunday morning. We ruffle our feathers at the thought of giving such things up even though we know doing so would draw us closer to God.
We may find satisfaction in the things of this world, but we will never soar as Christians until we are ready to give up all for God. Take Moses as an example. Hebrews 11:24-26 says, “By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward.” Moses could have spent his life enjoying the pleasures of the palace, but he chose to soar with God instead.
What in your life causes you to hold back from God? Let it go. Don’t just ruffle your feathers; take wing and fly. Too many spend their lives just sitting in the water.
