Sitting at the Feet of Jesus

September 2nd, 2008 by Jeremy Sprouse

Urgency! This one word defines the lives of most people. We know what is important in life (i.e., church, prayer, Bible study, and family), but sometimes we focus on what we think absolutely must be done now. When this happens, working to pay bills outweighs going to worship. Watching our favorite T.V. show coming on right now outweighs studying the Bible which we can do anytime. Cleaning the house before company comes over outweighs spending time with our family. Our day-to-day life appears so urgent it seems we do not have time for God.
Perhaps this is how Martha felt in Luke 10:38-42. She was hurrying about frantically trying to get everything prepared when she could have been sitting at the feet of Jesus. She is upset with Mary who is taking advantage of the opportunity she rejected. Jesus told her to stop being distracted by her life and focus on the one thing that was important—spending time with our Lord (Luke 10:42).
Remember the four soils in The Parable of the Sower (Luke 8:4-15). One of the soils Jesus teaches us about is the thorny soil. This is a heart that receives God’s Word readily, but lets the things of this life (worries, riches, and pleasure) choke it out so that it bears no fruit.
Doing those things we think are urgent in life to the detriment of our service to God can cause us to drift away from God. Eventually, as we continually ignore God to focus on this life we will no longer consider God important at all.
We need to stop focusing on what is urgent and focus on what is important. Take some time to sit at the feet of Jesus in your life. Stop hurrying frantically and pause to pray to God. Turn off the T.V. and read a few chapters of the Bible with your family. Make a commitment to fellowship and worship with the church at every available opportunity.
